Kufstein

Austria’s Kufstein is a small town with a big history. Strategically located at the northern end of the Tyrolean Alps, the town has been fought over and occupied by everyone from the Romans to the French and the Nazis. These days, Kufstein is a quiet, family-friendly place, popular with hikers and skiers in the winter and cyclists and tourists in the summer. The old town is a charming mix of cobbled streets, Baroque buildings and Gothic churches, and is well worth a wander. Don’t miss the Fort Kufstein, a mighty fortress that towers over the town, or the Imperial Palace, once the summer residence of the Habsburg emperors. And if you’re feeling adventurous, take the cable car up to the top of the Kaisergebirge mountains for some of the best views in the region.
