Located on Queensland's Fraser Coast, this calm beachside city is a prime spot to watch humpback whales from July to November, with direct access to Fraser Island.
Located 290 kilometers north of Brisbane, Hervey Bay draws thousands of humpback whales to its waters between July and October. You can watch these marine mammals up close from tour boats, walk the 1-kilometer Urangan Pier, swim at calm beaches, or cool off at WetSide Water Park. The city also connects travelers to K'gari (Fraser Island) with its inland lakes, ancient rainforests, and sand dunes.
Whale Watching in Hervey Bay
In 2019, Hervey Bay became the world's first Whale Heritage Site. Humpback whales swim through these waters from July to November, staying in Platypus Bay for several days at a time. You'll see them breaching, tail slapping, and swimming with their calves from tour boats, or sometimes from Urangan Pier. Multiple whale watching companies run daily tours during the season.
Exploring K'gari (Fraser Island)
K'gari sits across the bay, accessible by a 45-minute ferry ride from River Heads. The island's inland freshwater lakes include Lake McKenzie with its white silica sand and clear water. You'll need a 4x4 vehicle to drive along 75 Mile Beach and explore the subtropical rainforests. Day trips run regularly from Hervey Bay, or you can stay at wilderness lodges and camping areas on the island.
Beaches and Waterfront Activities
North-facing beaches create sheltered swimming conditions throughout the year. A 14-kilometer beachfront path connects several beach areas: Point Vernon with its rocky outcrops, Pialba's calm swimming spots, Torquay's beach parks, and Urangan's long pier. You can walk or cycle the entire path, stopping at cafes and picnic areas along the way.
Marine Life and Fishing
The waters contain 50 artificial reef sites where you can catch bream, barramundi, trevally, and snapper. Popular fishing spots include Urangan Pier, Gatakers Bay at Point Vernon, and the rocky outcrops near Pialba. Fishing charters operate year-round, taking anglers to deeper waters for larger catches.
Getting Around and Climate
Fly directly to Hervey Bay Airport from Brisbane (45 minutes), Sydney, or Melbourne. If driving from Brisbane, take the Bruce Highway north for 3.5 hours. Winter temperatures average 21.8°C with low rainfall, while summer brings temperatures around 30.3°C with higher humidity and occasional afternoon storms.
Local Activities
At WetSide Water Park, children can play on water slides and in splash zones. The 26-hectare Botanic Gardens contain walking trails through sections of coastal plants, bush tucker species, and orchid houses. For groceries and shopping, head to Stockland Hervey Bay in Urraween, the main shopping center in the region.
