Cochabamba is an agricultural center and the third-largest city in Bolivia. It is located in the central highlands, at an altitude of about 2,600 meters (8,500 feet). The city is an important commercial and transportation center, and its manufactures include textiles, metal products, and processed foods. Cochabamba was founded in 1571 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. The city’s name is derived from the Quechua word qucha, meaning “lake,” and the Spanish word bamba, meaning “big.” Cochabamba is noted for its pleasant climate and for its many fine churches.
