The peaks of Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat rise 1,236 meters above sea level, northwest of Barcelona. Ancient river sediments formed these rocky cliffs and peaks, which now stretch across the Catalonian countryside. You can hike to Sant Jeroni peak at sunrise, listen to the Escolania boys' choir perform Gregorian chants at noon, or watch Bonelli's eagles soar past the monastery walls.

Getting to Montserrat

You can reach the park by taking a train from Barcelona to Monistrol de Montserrat, followed by a cable car ride to the monastery area. The cable car station sits just a minute's walk from the train platform. If you're driving, a road leads directly to the monastery parking area.

The Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey

The basilica houses the statue of the Black Madonna, known locally as "La Moreneta." The Escolania boys' choir performs daily at 1:00 PM in the basilica (except school holidays). The monastery museum contains religious artifacts and artworks, including paintings by Caravaggio and El Greco.

Popular Hiking Routes

The Sant Jeroni Summit Loop (moderate difficulty) extends 9.3 kilometers with 603 meters of elevation gain. The trail winds past limestone cliffs and Mediterranean shrubland. At the Miranda de Santa Magdalena viewpoint (1,132 meters), you'll see the Llobregat River valley and eastern massif face. The steep Collbató trail (difficult) runs 13.4 kilometers through oak forests to the monastery, climbing 982 meters.

Wildlife and Geology

Oak forests shelter wild boars, red squirrels, and over 100 bird species. Bonelli's eagles and peregrine falcons build nests in the upper cliffs. The mountain formed from river delta sediments 45 million years ago, which compression and erosion shaped into tall conglomerate rock formations.

Local Communities

Four villages surround the mountain base: Monistrol, El Bruc, Collbató, and Marganell. Each village maintains its own trail access points. In Collbató, you can explore the Salnitre Caves, with guided tours available year-round. Monistrol de Montserrat (population 3,000) serves as the main arrival point for park visitors, with regular train connections to Barcelona.
