Portugalete lies where the Nervión River flows into the Bay of Biscay. María Díaz de Haro established the town in 1322. Cross the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO site that stretches over the estuary, or step inside Santa María Basilica to see its Gothic arches. The town’s streets wind past 15th-century stone towers and a town hall decorated with iron balconies. Though part of Bilbao’s metro area, it keeps its own character shaped by fishing traditions and summer festivals like San Roque.

Vizcaya Bridge: The First Transporter Bridge

The Vizcaya Bridge opened in 1893 as the world’s first transporter bridge. Alberto Palacio designed its gondola system, which lifts people and cars 45 meters above the river between Portugalete and Getxo. The iron structure, painted dark green, stands out against nearby factories and docks. Stop by the visitor center to see models of the bridge’s mechanics or ride the elevator to the upper walkway for views of the estuary. UNESCO added the bridge to its list in 2006 for its innovative design.

Historic Architecture in the Old Quarter

The Basílica of Santa María dominates Portugalete’s old quarter with its 15th-century Gothic design. Inside, sunlight filters through stained-glass windows onto stone floors. A short walk away, Salazar’s Tower shows thick walls and narrow windows from its time as a 14th-century defensive home. Follow Calle Santa María to see original cobblestone paths and arched doorways that marked the town’s medieval limits. The town hall, built in 1883, includes a clock tower and iron railings crafted by local metalworkers.

San Roque Festival and Seasonal Events

Portugalete’s biggest celebration starts before sunrise on August 15th, when crowds sing “La Diana Portugaluja” outside the town hall. The next day, parades fill the streets with music and dancers in traditional costumes. Pop-up bars serve chilled txakoli wine and small plates like grilled octopus or cod omelets. On the final night, fireworks explode over the river. In July, a market takes over the plaza with blacksmiths, weavers, and musicians dressed in medieval clothing.

Exploring Nearby Towns and Beaches

Ride the Vizcaya gondola to Getxo to see grand 19th-century homes and a wide sandy beach. Travel 20 minutes by metro to Bilbao for the Guggenheim Museum’s titanium curves. West of Portugalete, Sopelana’s waves attract surfers year-round. The town’s metro station links to Bilbao’s center, which helps visitors save on hotels. Walk sections of the Camino del Norte trail to reach Pobeña’s rocky cliffs and quiet coves.

Eating, Drinking, and Daily Routines

Bars along Avenida Abaroxto fill with locals sharing plates of garlicky cod or squid cooked in its own ink. Family-run spots like Casa Nicolasa serve bean stews and grilled meats, reflecting the town’s industrial roots. On weekends, families stroll the riverside promenade, where kids toss bread to ducks near fishing boats. Catch a Club Portugalete soccer match at La Florida stadium to see fans cheer under red-and-white banners.

Getting There and Weather Tips

Bilbao Airport, 15 kilometers from Portugalete, has regular flights to cities like London and Madrid. Take Line 2 of the metro from Portugalete station to reach Bilbao’s old town in 25 minutes. Summer temperatures hover around 24°C, but bring a jacket for cooler mornings and occasional rain in spring or fall. Check Schengen visa requirements based on your passport. For medical needs, Hospital de Santa Marina in Barakaldo serves the area.
