This coastal town on Gran Canaria's southwest has a golden sand beach, two marinas, and year-round swimming in 20-25°C waters. Home to Olympic sailors and world-record fishing spots.
Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria sits on the southwestern coast of Gran Canaria, Spain. The town extends up the hillsides around a central valley, where you'll find the Angry Birds Activity Park, Atlantida water park, and shopping centers like The Market and Mogán Mall. At its heart lies a golden sand beach and two marinas, with Atlantic waters home to dolphins and blue marlins.
Year-Round Mediterranean Climate
Winter temperatures range between 20-25°C, with fewer than three days of rain per month. This weather makes Puerto Rico one of Spain's sunniest spots, letting you swim, sail, and explore outdoors from January through December.
Puerto Rico Beach
The beach stretches 250 meters long and 90 meters wide, protected by breakwaters that keep the water calm. A promenade runs alongside the golden sand. You can rent water sports equipment, sunbeds, and use the beach showers. The clear water visibility extends up to 10 meters, making it easy to spot fish while swimming or snorkeling.
Water Activities at the Marina
From the two harbors, you can join dolphin-watching trips, glass-bottom boat tours, or deep-sea fishing expeditions. The local sailing center has trained five Olympic gold medalists, and local fishermen have set more than 50 world records in these waters.
Family Activities
Children can play at the Angry Birds Activity Park on Avenida de la Cornisa. Next door, Atlantida water park has slides and swimming pools. A 15-minute bus ride takes you to Aqualand Maspalomas, with its 33 water slides and attractions.
Shopping Districts
The Pasarela center sits a five-minute walk from the beach, while the main Commercial Center occupies the town center. The Market Puerto Rico, which opened in 2019, emphasizes casual shopping, and Mogán Mall stands as southern Gran Canaria's largest shopping complex.
Getting Around and Day Trips
Buses run every 30 minutes to connect Puerto Rico with other parts of Gran Canaria. You can walk to Amadores Beach (1 km northwest) or take a short bus ride to Tauro Beach. The public transport system connects you to Maspalomas Dunes and the mountain peak of Roque Nublo.
Water Sports
The breakwater-protected waters and steady winds create good conditions for water sports. You can take PADI diving courses, jet-ski in marked zones, or learn windsurfing. The marina's sailing schools teach all skill levels, from first-time sailors to advanced racers.
