Roncesvalles, a small village in Spain's Pyrenees mountains, sits at an altitude of 900 meters near the French border. You'll find medieval stone buildings including the 13th-century Collegiate Church of Santa María with its towering Gothic arches and a silver-coated Virgin Mary statue. Each day, pilgrims walking the Camino Frances arrive at this mountain settlement to rest in centuries-old dormitories, attend evening mass, and explore the surrounding oak forests.

Getting Around Roncesvalles

You can drive to Roncesvalles from Pamplona in about 1 hour, or walk from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France, which takes about 8 hours. The village lies 21 kilometers by road from the French border. All points of interest are within a 5-minute walk from the village center.

Religious Buildings and Architecture

The Collegiate Church of Santa María rises above the village center with its French Gothic design. Walk inside to see the marble tomb of King Sancho VII and a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary covered in silver. Next door, the 12th-century Chapel of Sancti Spiritus contains a vaulted crypt beneath its stone floor. The Church of Santiago and its monastery buildings have welcomed pilgrims since the 13th century.

Pilgrim Services and Facilities

You can stay at the Albergue de Peregrinos, which has 183 beds across three floors and stays open year-round. The building includes laundry facilities, bike storage, and horse stables. Daily mass takes place at the Collegiate Church, with pilgrim blessings at 8 PM on weekdays and 6 PM on weekends (7 PM from July to October). If you prefer camping, there are designated areas with showers and toilets.

Food and Dining

Local kitchens prepare regional Pyrenean dishes like migas de pastor (shepherd's breadcrumbs), wild mushroom scrambled eggs, and wild boar stew. For groceries, walk 30 minutes to the supermarket in Burguete. Two restaurants in Roncesvalles serve pilgrim menus, and you'll find basic supplies in vending machines throughout the village.

Natural Surroundings

Walk through beech and oak forests on marked trails leading to mountain peaks. Climb Lindus (1,220 meters) or Ortzanzurieta (1,570 meters) for views across the Pyrenees. The Burguete bunkers route takes you past World War II fortifications, while the Canons' path winds through medieval trade routes. In the Woods of Basajaunberro, hiking trails cross streams and pass through dense forest.

Historical Background

The monastery-hospital's construction began in 1127, when the Bishop of Pamplona and King Alfonso I created a refuge for pilgrims crossing the Pyrenees. The current Gothic church complex dates from the early 13th century, built under King Sancho VII of Navarra. In 778 CE, the Battle of Roncevaux Pass took place here, where local tribes defeated Charlemagne's rear guard - an event later immortalized in the medieval Song of Roland.
