Once a small and sleepy town, Vila-real has seen a recent resurgence as a tourist destination, in part due to its close proximity to Valencia. The old town is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses and flower-filled plazas, while the newer part of town is home to a large and lively commercial center. The main attraction is the massive 16th-century castle, perched on a hill overlooking the town. There are also several churches and monasteries worth visiting, as well as a few excellent restaurants and wine bars.
