Old Goa, once the capital of Portuguese India, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located 10 kilometers east of Panaji, it houses several 16th and 17th-century religious buildings. You can visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, among others. These structures showcase Baroque and Renaissance architectural styles, reflecting the area's colonial history and religious significance.

Exploring Old Goa's Churches

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, completed in 1605, is one of Old Goa's key landmarks. Inside, you'll find the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church's ornate facade and intricate interior make it a prime example of Baroque architecture in India. Next door stands Se Cathedral, the largest church in Asia. While there, listen for its famous 'Golden Bell', known for its rich tone.

As you walk through Old Goa, you'll come across other significant buildings like the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Chapel of St. Catherine, and the ruins of the Church of St. Augustine. These structures date back to the 16th and 17th centuries when Old Goa was the capital of Portuguese India and a bustling port for the spice trade, particularly pepper and cinnamon.

Planning Your Visit to Old Goa

You can reach Old Goa by bus or taxi from Panaji, about 9 kilometers away. Walking allows you to take in the details of the old buildings and streets. Local guides, some approved by Goa's tourism department, can provide in-depth information about the sites and their history.

When visiting churches, dress modestly and remember that photography of people inside is often prohibited. Most sites are open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily.

Beyond Old Goa

While in the area, take a ferry to Divar Island, a calm spot on the Mandovi River. In Panaji, explore Fontainhas, the Latin Quarter, where you can see colorful Portuguese-style houses and join a guided walk to learn about the area's history.

When to Visit

Plan your trip between November and February for cooler, drier weather. If you're interested in local events, visit on December 3rd for the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, which draws pilgrims from around the world.
