Arak is a medium-sized city in central Iran, located on the Silk Road. It is the capital of Arak Province and the center of the Arak metropolitan area. At the 2011 census, its population was 558,839, in 149,765 families. Arak is the most important city in the region of Markazi, both economically and politically.
The city is home to a number of industries, including dairy, cement, tile, glass, and textile. It is also known for its tea, which is produced in the surrounding countryside. Arak is an important transportation hub, with links to Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz. The city is also home to a major military base.
