Sanandaj is the capital of the Iranian province of Kurdistan. It is located in the mountains, about 1,500 metres above sea level. The city has a population of about 425,000. The Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the city, followed by the Azeris and the Persians. The city is home to a large number of universities, including the University of Kurdistan, the Islamic Azad University of Sanandaj, and the Sanandaj Branch of the Allameh Tabataba'i University. There are also a number of hospitals, including the Sanandaj Medical Sciences University Hospital and the Imam Khomeini Hospital. The city is home to a number of parks, including the Taleqani Park, the Shahid Madani Park, and the Kaveh Park.
