Semnan is a city in the north-east of Iran. It is the capital of Semnan Province. Semnan is located 685 kilometres (425 mi) east of Tehran, at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) above sea level. The city was founded in the 7th century BC by the Aryans. It has a population of 1,300,000 people. The city is the cultural and economic center of the Semnan Province. Semnan is known for its carpets, Tabriz-made rugs, its pottery, its tiles, and its mineral water.
