Experience the wild beauty of Chubu Sangaku National Park, home to Japan's tallest dam, challenging alpine peaks, and bathing snow monkeys.
Chubu Sangaku National Park is an untamed natural beauty located in the heart of Japan's Honshu Island. The park is famed for its towering alpine peaks, wild monkeys and deep snow during winter months.
Covering a large part of the Hida Mountains, also known as the "Northern Alps", it offers some of the most challenging mountain routes in Japan. The highest mountain in the park, Mount Tsurugi, stands at 2,999 meters and offers a challenging climb even for experienced mountaineers.
The park is also home to the famous Kurobe Dam, Japan's tallest, creating the Lake Kurobe. The dam is a popular destination especially during the summer months when water is released from its gates creating a spectacular sight.
It is home to the Japanese macaque, known as snow monkeys, which are often seen bathing in hot springs during the cold winter months.
The park is best reached from Toyama city which lies on the northern boundary of the park. The city has a direct bullet train connection to Tokyo making it a convenient entry point. From Toyama, local buses take you deeper into the park.
