Fujikawaguchiko, a town at the base of Mount Fuji, sits about two hours from Tokyo. It surrounds Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. In this area, you can admire Mount Fuji from various angles, ride the ropeway for panoramic views, explore the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, or soak in hot spring baths. During summer, Fujikawaguchiko serves as a starting point for climbing Mount Fuji. With its proximity to Tokyo, the town is a popular choice for day trips or weekend getaways.

Mount Fuji Viewing Spots

From the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, you can see Mount Fuji's reflection in the water. For a higher vantage point, take the Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway to the observation deck on Mount Tenjo. At nearby Arakurayama Sengen Park, the Chureito Pagoda offers a view of the mountain framed by cherry blossoms in spring or colorful leaves in autumn. Since clouds often cover the summit, especially in the afternoon, try to view Fuji early in the morning for clearer conditions.

Activities on Lake Kawaguchi

Lake Kawaguchi, the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes, offers various activities. You can walk or cycle along the shoreline promenade, passing through parks with seasonal flowers. To get out on the water, rent a swan-shaped paddle boat. For a guided experience, take a sightseeing cruise to learn about the lake's formation and ecology. Fishing is popular, with catches including carp and trout depending on the season.

Museums and Cultural Sites

At the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, you'll find kimonos created using a revived silk dyeing technique. The museum's architecture incorporates natural materials like volcanic rock, and its grounds include a traditional tea house. The Kawaguchiko Music Forest houses a collection of automatic musical instruments in a European-style garden setting. If you're interested in art focused on Mount Fuji, visit the Kawaguchiko Museum of Art to see paintings and photographs capturing the mountain in different seasons and styles.

Hot Springs

After exploring the area, you can relax in one of Fujikawaguchiko's many hot spring baths. Some ryokan inns allow day visitors to use their onsen facilities for a fee. At Yurari Onsen, you can soak in both indoor and outdoor baths with views of Mount Fuji. For a private experience, consider staying at a ryokan like Kozantei Ubuya, where you can enjoy an open-air bath overlooking the lake and mountain.

Transportation

To reach Fujikawaguchiko from Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, then transfer to the Fujikyu Railway to Kawaguchiko Station. This journey takes about 2.5 hours. Alternatively, direct highway buses run from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko in about 2 hours. Once in town, use the color-coded Omni Bus lines to reach major sights around the lake. The Red Line covers the eastern shore, while the Green Line runs along the southern shore and continues to Lake Saiko. You can also rent a bicycle to explore the area at your own pace.
