Mito is the capital of Ibaraki Prefecture, in the Kantō region of Japan. The city was founded on February 11, 1889. As of September 2016, the city had an estimated population of 598,058 and a population density of 2,480 persons per km². The total area is 241.47 km².
Mito is located in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, in the Kantō region of Japan. It is situated on the Shimotsuke Plain, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Tokyo. The city is surrounded by the mountains of the Tone and Ōarai ranges.
The city has a humid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Precipitation is significant throughout the year, but is heaviest from June to September. Mito is located in the snow belt region of Japan and receives significant snowfall during the winter.
