The wild and untamed Great Barrier Island is a place of raw natural beauty and rugged charm. A designated conservation area, the island is a haven for rare and endangered wildlife, including kiwi, takahe and kakapo. With over 100km of coastline to explore, there are plenty of secluded coves and sheltered bays to find, as well as dramatic headlands and towering cliffs. The interior of the island is a rugged and largely uninhabited wilderness, with soaring peaks, rushing rivers and ancient forests. There are only a handful of small villages on the island, and the locals are a friendly and independent bunch who have a strong sense of community spirit. With its unspoilt beaches, dramatic landscapes and welcoming locals, Great Barrier Island is a true hidden gem.
