Turangi sits on the banks of the Tongariro River, 40 minutes south of Taupo in New Zealand's North Island. You'll find yourself minutes away from world-class trout fishing spots, emerald crater lakes, and steaming thermal pools. Getting to Turangi

Drive 40 minutes south from Taupo along State Highway 1, following Lake Taupo's eastern shore. Intercity buses stop in Turangi on routes between major North Island cities. If you plan to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, shuttle services pick up from central Turangi and drop you at the trailhead, 20 kilometers away.

Fishing in the Tongariro River

The Tongariro River flows through Turangi, with multiple access points for fishing. Rainbow trout swim upstream from Lake Taupo to spawn year-round, particularly during winter and spring. Local fishing guides know specific pools where trout gather and can help you obtain a fishing license. Visit the Tongariro National Trout Centre to see the fish hatchery and native New Zealand fish species in their natural habitat.

Hiking Trails Near Turangi

Walk the Lake Rotopounamu track through native beech forest to reach three white sand beaches. The 2-hour loop circles a peaceful crater lake. The 15-kilometer Tongariro River Trail follows both riverbanks, crossing four swing bridges with views of fishing pools and rapids. For a full-day hike, take on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The 19.4-kilometer trail winds past Mt Ngauruhoe's red crater and the bright green Emerald Lakes.

Winter Activities

Mt Ruapehu's Whakapapa ski field lies 40 minutes from Turangi. The slopes include a dedicated beginners' area, intermediate runs, and black diamond trails for advanced skiers. Catch the daily shuttle bus from Turangi to the ski field. Children can enjoy the Happy Valley snow play area, with gentle slopes for tobogganing and snow tubing.

Thermal Springs and Cultural Sites

Soak in the mineral pools at Tokaanu, 5 kilometers from Turangi. Walk the short thermal track to see bubbling mud pools and steam vents. At Opotaka, near Lake Rotoaira, read the story of Te Rauparaha and how he composed the Ka Mate Haka while hiding from pursuing warriors. Information panels explain the haka's movements and their meaning.

Mountain Biking Trails

Cycle the Tongariro River Trail on 15 kilometers of track through native bush. The trail crosses two swing bridges and includes several riverside rest spots. For more challenging rides, head to Tree Trunk Gorge's technical single tracks or tackle the 46-kilometer 42 Traverse through Tongariro Forest, with steep descents and stream crossings.
