Kimberley is a city in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located about 135 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. Kimberley was founded in 1871, and was the first city in South Africa to be erected with electric streetlights. The city is known for its diamond mines, which yielded some of the world's largest diamonds, including the Star of South Africa, the Cullinan Diamond, and the De Beers Diamond. The first diamond was found on the banks of the Orange River in 1866 by Erasmus Jacobs and his two sons.
