Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo Province, is South Africa's largest urban center north of Gauteng. Walk among zebras and giraffes at the Polokwane Game Reserve, see thousands of historic photographs at the Hugh Exton Museum, or watch craftspeople work at the Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum. Each Easter and September, over 2 million Zion Christian Church members gather at Zion City Moria for South Africa's largest Christian festivals.

Getting to Polokwane

You can fly to Polokwane International Airport from major South African cities, or drive the N1 highway from Pretoria (360km south) or Zimbabwe's border. Within the city, you'll find local taxis and car rental agencies. From its position 1,230 meters above sea level, you can reach Kruger National Park and the Magoebaskloof mountains within a day's drive.

Climate and Weather

The city sits on the Tropic of Capricorn, with mild temperatures year-round due to its elevation. January sees temperatures of 21-22°C (70-72°F), while July cools to around 11°C (52°F). Most rain falls between December and February.

Wildlife at Polokwane Game Reserve

At the Polokwane Game Reserve, 5 kilometers south of the city center, you can spot 21 species of animals including zebra, giraffe, and white rhino. Walk the marked trails through the bushveld or join a guided game drive. The reserve welcomes visitors from sunrise to sunset, with animals most active in the early morning.

Museums and Cultural Sites

Watch Northern Sotho craftspeople make pottery and tools at the Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum, where you can learn about farming methods and daily life of the Bakone people. The Hugh Exton Photographic Museum houses 23,000 glass negatives documenting city life from 1890 to 1945. Local artists exhibit their work at the Irish House Art Gallery in the Library Gardens.

Religious Gatherings at Zion City

During Easter and September, Zion City Moria hosts week-long Christian celebrations. Over 2 million church members set up camp in designated areas with temporary facilities. If you visit during these times, wear modest clothing and follow local customs.

Shopping and Urban Life

Mall of the North has over 180 stores and entertainment venues. In the central business district, street vendors sell fresh fruits, vegetables, and handmade items. Along Thabo Mbeki and Church Streets, you'll find restaurants serving South African dishes like pap, boerewors, and malva pudding.
