A calm coastal town on Albania's Riviera with white pebble beaches and clear Ionian waters. Greek and Albanian cultures shape the local food and traditions.
Himarë stretches along Albania's southern Ionian coast, with its main beach extending over a kilometer of white sand. You'll find Byzantine churches and a 5th-century BC castle in the upper town, while the modern beachfront district has waterfront cafes and restaurants. Local people speak both Albanian and Greek, maintaining connections to both cultures through food, festivals, and daily life.
Beaches in and Around Himarë
The main Spile Beach runs alongside a street filled with cafes and small shops. Walk 15 minutes south to reach Prinos and Potami beaches, which have fewer facilities but more open space for swimming and sunbathing. At Livadhi Beach, a 30-minute walk from town, you can snorkel in clear blue water while limestone cliffs tower above the shoreline.
Exploring by Boat
From May to October, local boats take small groups to nearby beaches and sea caves. Most trips include stops at Gjipe Beach and several coastal caves, with time for swimming and snorkeling. You can also rent kayaks to explore smaller coves at your own pace.
Getting Around the Area
The beachfront area has flat, easy-to-walk streets. Regular buses connect Himarë to Porto Palermo Castle (15 km south) and Dhermi Beach (12 km north) during summer months. Renting a car makes it easier to visit the small stone villages in the mountains above town.
Local Food Scene
Waterfront restaurants serve fresh fish grilled with local olive oil and lemon. In traditional tavernas, you'll find pasha qofte (meatballs with mint) and byrek (savory pie). Small morning markets sell figs, olives, and citrus fruits grown in nearby orchards.
The Castle Quarter
A steep path leads from the beach to the hilltop castle (about one hour walk). Inside the castle walls, you'll find several Byzantine churches, including the Church of Virgin Mary built on ancient Apollo temple foundations. Visit in the morning for better lighting conditions when photographing the coastline below.
Seasonal Considerations
May, June, September, and October see temperatures around 25°C (77°F), ideal for outdoor activities. The water becomes warm enough for swimming in late May. July and August temperatures rise above 30°C (86°F), bringing more visitors but the beaches remain manageable. Most businesses close from November to March.
