Abovyan is a small city located in the Kotayk Province of Armenia. It is situated on the left bank of Hrazdan River, about 25 km northeast of the capital Yerevan. The city was founded in 1961 as a result of the merger of the villages of Abovyan and Aknashen.
The city is home to the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport.
