Explore Trebevic Mountain for hiking, history, and panoramic views of Sarajevo, with access via cable car and diverse trails for outdoor enthusiasts.
Trebevic Mountain rises southeast of Sarajevo, just minutes from Bosnia's capital. A rebuilt cable car takes you up the mountain, where you can walk forest trails, explore an abandoned Olympic bobsled track, eat lunch among pine trees, or pedal down bike paths. From Trebevic's peak, you'll see Sarajevo spread out below and the surrounding Dinaric Alps.
The Trebevic Cable Car transports you from Sarajevo's old town to the mountainside in 7 minutes. During the ride, you'll watch the city grow smaller as you approach the forested slopes. The upper station is at 1,160 meters, offering wide views of Sarajevo and the nearby mountains. The cable car operates daily when weather conditions are suitable.
From the cable car's upper station, clearly marked trails lead through pine and spruce woods to Trebevic's 1,629 meter peak. Most hikers take about 2 hours each way on the main trail to the top. You'll walk through mountain meadows and pass rocky outcrops as you ascend. At the summit, you can see far into the distance - in clear weather, you might spot Bjelasnica, Igman and other Dinaric Alps peaks. For a shorter walk, take the road from the cable car to several lookout spots nearby.
One of the most interesting sights on Trebevic is the abandoned bobsled and luge track from the 1984 Winter Olympics. The 1,300 meter concrete course winds through the forest, now covered with vibrant graffiti. You can walk along parts of the track and imagine the athletes who once raced here at 100 km/hour. During the 1990s siege of Sarajevo, soldiers used the track as a defensive position. Today, many visitors come here to explore and take photos.
Trebevic has many mountain biking trails for different skill levels. If you're an expert rider, you can try the challenging ride down the old Olympic bobsled track. For easier rides, you'll find gentler paths through the forest. You can rent bikes at several places on the mountain. For a more relaxed visit, bring food for a picnic at one of the open areas with views of Sarajevo. In winter, when there's enough snow, people come to Trebevic for sledding and cross-country skiing.
At the foot of Trebevic, you'll find Sunnyland, a park with an alpine coaster ride that lets you see the city as you slide down. Several restaurants on the mountain serve traditional Bosnian food - try the grilled meats and burek pastries. If you want to stay overnight on Trebevic, the Pino Nature Hotel has comfortable rooms and good food. For those seeking excitement, you can ride a zip line near the hotel for a thrilling glide with great views.
