A calm Black Sea resort town with two Blue Flag beaches and remains of a 5th-century Thracian sanctuary. Popular among families during summer months.
Primorsko, a town on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, has three beaches where water temperatures reach 28°C in summer. You can walk through the stone circles of Beglik Tash, a 3,500-year-old Thracian sanctuary, or take a boat down the Ropotamo River to see herons and cormorants. The town comes alive in summer with beach volleyball tournaments and the International Folk Art Festival, while hiking paths wind through the pine forests around town.
Swimming at Primorsko's Beaches
Three beaches line the town's coast. North Beach has restaurants, changing rooms, and umbrella rentals but fills with visitors in July and August. South Beach sees fewer people, particularly at its southern section near Kiten. The water stays at 27-28°C during summer, and each beach has spots to rent water skis and play volleyball. Perla Beach sits between pine trees and attracts the smallest crowds.
Discovering Ropotamo Reserve
Take a boat trip up the Ropotamo River to see limestone cliffs and wetlands. Boats depart every hour between 9 AM and 5 PM, passing herons, cormorants, and occasionally water snakes. In the Arkutino section (Bear's Swamp), white and yellow water lilies cover the water surface from June to September. You can also follow marked walking paths through oak forests and along the riverbank.
Ancient Sites Around Town
The Beglik Tash sanctuary sits 128 meters above sea level. Ancient Thracians arranged massive stone blocks into a 56-meter ritual circle, using it for ceremonies from 1500 BC until the 300s AD. Within 5 kilometers of Primorsko, you'll find four more sanctuaries and 12 dolmens (stone burial chambers). Local guides lead two-hour tours explaining the astronomical alignments and ritual purposes of these sites.
Getting to Primorsko
Minibuses run every hour from Burgas to Primorsko, with the 52-kilometer journey taking about an hour. If you arrive at Burgas International Airport, you can take a taxi - ask the driver to use the meter or agree on the price beforehand to avoid overcharging. In Primorsko, you can walk between the beaches, restaurants, and hotels within 15-20 minutes.
Summer Events and Activities
The water park has eight slides, including the gentle Lazy River and the steep Kamikaze slide (entry: 25 leva for adults). Watch volleyball and basketball tournaments at the 1,000-seat sports hall throughout summer. In July, Bulgarian folk bands perform at town squares during the International Folk Art Festival. The June 30th July Morning celebration brings rock bands to the beach for an all-night concert. August's 4x4 races draw off-road vehicles to compete on nearby forest tracks.
