Pointe-Noire is the second largest city in the Republic of Congo, lying on the Atlantic coast. It is a major port and the country's industrial center. The city was founded in 1880 by Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza as a French trading post. The name derives from the pointe (point) of the peninsula on which the city is located and the French word noire (black). The city is a mix of cultures, with a large population of people of African descent, as well as a significant population of French and other European expatriates.
