The capital of Aargau canton welcomes visitors with its medieval old town, central square, and active art scene. A short climb up Gurten reveals city panoramas.
Aarau, the capital of Aargau canton, stretches along the River Aare in northern Switzerland. Walk through medieval streets to discover painted gables called Dachhimmel from the 16th century, watch children parade with lanterns during the September Bachfischet festival, or browse local produce at the weekly market. You'll find Switzerland's largest collection of Swiss art at the Aargau Art Museum, and can take short trips to three nearby medieval castles including the moated Hallwyl Castle.
Exploring the Painted Gables
Look up while walking through Aarau's old town to see the Dachhimmel - painted undersides of roof eaves that tell stories about the buildings and their past inhabitants. More than 70 buildings display these unique 16th-century paintings, each with its own patterns and colors. Join a guided tour to learn about the specific designs and what they meant to the families who lived here centuries ago.
Museums and Art
The Aargauer Kunsthaus holds Switzerland's largest collection of Swiss art, with works ranging from 18th-century paintings to contemporary installations. Herzog & de Meuron added a modern wing to the original medieval building in 2003. At the Naturama, interactive exhibits show you the region's extinct and living species. Scientists regularly update the displays with new findings about local flora and fauna.
Three Medieval Castles
Take short trips from Aarau to visit three nearby castles. Water surrounds Hallwyl Castle on three sides, where you can see art collections from the noble Hallwyl family. Climb up to Lenzburg Castle, nicknamed the Dragon Castle, for views across the region. Visit the ruins of Habsburg Castle, where the powerful Habsburg dynasty began before ruling much of Europe.
Markets and Local Events
Meet local farmers every Saturday morning at the market in the Graben area of the old town. In November, join the Rüeblimärt (Carrot Market) celebration of local agriculture. The Bachfischet in September ranks among Switzerland's oldest traditions - watch as children carry lanterns through streets to mark the annual cleaning of the town's stream. During the May Jazzaar Festival, you can hear international jazz musicians perform throughout town.
Getting Around
Take a train from Zurich (30 minutes) or Basel (45 minutes) to reach Aarau. You can walk to most sights within 10 minutes from the train station in the compact old town. If you drive, park in one of several garages at the edge of the pedestrian zone. Local buses run through the old town and connect to nearby areas.
