The island has a long history. It has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The first people to settle on the island were the Finno-Ugric people. The island was conquered by the Danes in the 12th century. Later, it was ruled by the Swedes and the Russians.

Hiiumaa is a popular place for holidaymakers. There are many beaches and resorts on the island. The island is also a popular place for windsurfing.
