Al Arish is a city located in the North Sinai Governorate of Egypt. It is situated on the Mediterranean Sea, around 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the Gaza Strip and around 145 kilometres (90 mi) from the Israeli city of Ashkelon. In Coptic, it is known as Arish. It is the largest city in the Sinai Peninsula and the second largest in the region after El-Tor.
Al Arish is a busy market town and has a population of around 175,000, although the population of the urban area is much higher. The city is a popular tourist destination, with many hotels and Bedouin camps located along the Mediterranean coast.
