Asyut is located on the west bank of the Nile River, some 420 km south of Cairo. The modern city has grown up around the ancient one and many of its ancient monuments still survive. These include the temples of Khnum, Satet and Anuket, and the tombs of the Eleventh Dynasty kings. The city is also home to the Asyut Museum, which houses a large collection of ancient Egyptian art.
