Mazagón

From pirates to prawns on golden Atlantic sands

This coastal town on Spain's Atlantic shore has 12 kilometers of golden beaches, a 52-meter lighthouse, and fresh seafood restaurants next to Doñana National Park.

Mazagón sits along Spain's Atlantic coast in Huelva province. You can walk the 12-kilometer stretch of golden sandy beaches, climb the 52-meter Picacho lighthouse for views across the coastline, or spot wildlife in the neighboring Doñana National Park. Local restaurants like El Espigón de la Gamba and Casa Rufino serve fresh seafood caught daily from the Atlantic waters.

Beaches of Mazagón

The main Playa de Mazagón runs 5.5 kilometers from the marina, with white sand and shallow waters where families swim in summer. Walk west to reach Playa de las Dunas, which attracts fewer visitors and has space to spread out. At Playa de Alcor, sand dunes rise between clusters of pine trees, creating natural paths for walking and taking photos.

Historical Structures

The Picacho lighthouse has guided ships since 1902, rising 52 meters above sea level at Huelva's port entrance. You can visit its small bar during summer. Between Mazagón and Matalascañas stands Torre del Loro, a 300-year-old watchtower built to spot pirates. The Casa del Vigía from the early 1900s remains empty but marks the spot where harbor pilots once watched incoming ships.

Local Food Scene

Restaurants cluster along Carretera de la Playa and the beachfront. In summer, beach bars (chiringuitos) set up directly on the sand. The daily catch includes prawns, coquina clams, and fresh fish that goes straight from boat to kitchen. Ask locals about their preferred spots for the best seafood.

Getting Around

To reach Mazagón from Huelva city (21 kilometers away), drive south on the H-30 and continue onto the N-442 across the Río Tinto. The road leads straight into town. You can walk between the center, beaches, and marina in 15-20 minutes.

Seasonal Events

Maritime traditions shape local festivals. Join the Romería de Nuestra Señora del Carmen on the first weekend of May, or watch the boat procession during Festividad del Carmen on July 16. The town fair brings music and food stalls to the streets during the first weekend of August, Thursday through Sunday.
