Bahir Dar is a city on the southern shore of Lake Tana in Ethiopia. It is the capital of the Amhara Region. Bahir Dar is located approximately 578 kilometers north-northwest of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and has a latitude and longitude of 11°36′N 38°47′E / 11.600°N 38.783°E / 11.600; 38.783. The city has a population of 327,531, while the metropolitan area has a population of 677,500.
Bahir Dar is known for its wide avenues lined with palm trees, its impressive Blue Nile Falls, and the monasteries on the islands of Lake Tana. The city is also home to the University of Bahir Dar.
