Harar is a walled city in eastern Ethiopia, lying on the eastern edge of the Ethiopian highlands at an elevation of 2,200 meters. It is the oldest city in Ethiopia and one of the oldest in Africa. The city is notable for its medieval Islamic architecture, with 102 mosques, three of which date from the 10th century, and many more from the 16th and 17th centuries. A few Christian churches from the colonial period are also located in the city. The city is home to the tombs of several Muslim saints, as well as the home of the University of Harar.
