Aylesbury is a market town in Buckinghamshire, England, about 55 miles (89 km) north west of London. It is the county town of Buckinghamshire.
The town’s origins date back to the Anglo-Saxon period when it was first mentioned in the will of King Æthelstan. In the 10th century, a market was established and the first church, St. Mary’s, was built. The 11th century saw the construction of a castle which was destroyed by Henry II in 1155.
Aylesbury was a centre of the wool and leather trade in the Middle Ages and the town’s prosperity is reflected in the architecture of the period. Today, many of the town’s historic buildings are still in use, including the 16th century Aylesbury Mansion and the 12th century St. Mary’s Church.
