Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery
William Crawshay's 1824 mansion now holds collections of local art and industrial artifacts. Getting Around
The bus station on Swan Street connects with the railway station as part of the South Wales Metro network. Trains run to Cardiff hourly, with a journey time of about 60 minutes. You can walk between most places in the town center within 20 minutes.
Industrial Legacy
Merthyr Tydfil led the world in iron production during the early 19th century. The Dowlais ironworks grew to employ over 5,000 workers by the 1830s, producing 40% of Britain's iron exports. In 1804, Richard Trevithick built and tested the world's first steam locomotive on the town's tramways.
