This port town in East Sussex links England to Dieppe, France via daily ferry services. The 19th-century Fort and local fish market draw visitors to its harbor area.
Newhaven sits where the River Ouse meets the English Channel in East Sussex. You can climb the 19th-century Newhaven Fort for 20-mile views across the harbor and downs, watch fishermen unload their daily catch at West Quay, or take a ferry to Dieppe, France. The town's three art galleries and maritime museums complement its active fishing port, while Castle Hill's chalk grasslands provide walking paths with views of the channel.
Getting to Newhaven
The town sits at the junction of the A26 and A259 coastal road between Brighton and Eastbourne. Regular trains connect Newhaven to London via Lewes, taking about 1 hour 20 minutes. DFDS Seaways runs daily ferry services to Dieppe.
Exploring Newhaven Fort
Built in 1864, this Victorian fortress defended the harbor during World War II from German air raids. Walk through underground tunnels and former ammunition rooms, and see exhibits showing soldiers' daily life during wartime. The ramparts give clear views of the English Channel, Seaford Head, and the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Open daily 10:30 AM to 5 PM, March through October.
Water Activities at the Marina
Local boats and visiting vessels from across Europe dock at Newhaven Marina. Join the Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club's weekly races and training courses from April to September. You can learn scuba diving and explore nearby shipwrecks, take water skiing lessons, or learn sailing basics.
Natural Spaces
Walk through 34 acres of chalk grassland at Castle Hill Nature Reserve next to the fort. The trails lead through meadows where you'll find over 50 species of wildflowers, including rare orchids. In summer, common blue and chalk hill blue butterflies inhabit the area. At the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve on the eastern side of town, follow riverside paths to spot oystercatchers and redshanks.
Local Fish Market and Food
Visit West Quay's daily fish market from 7 AM to buy fresh catch directly from fishing boats. Depending on the season, you'll find mackerel, cod, and dover sole. Local fish shops smoke their own fish and sell prepared seafood dishes.
Art and Museums
The Newhaven Local & Maritime Museum contains ship models, navigation equipment, and photographs from the 1850s onward. Three town center galleries display contemporary paintings and sculptures by Sussex artists. At Paradise Park, the Planet Earth Museum exhibits Jurassic fossils and South Downs minerals, with Mediterranean and woodland gardens surrounding the building.
