This calm coastal village on Iceland's northern shore has a clifftop geothermal pool overlooking Drangey island, basalt columns at Staðarbjargavík, and a center documenting 19th-century emigration.
Hofsós, a village of 200 residents on Iceland's northern coast, sits along the eastern shore of Skagafjörður Fjord. You can swim in a clifftop geothermal pool while watching waves crash against Drangey island, trace your family history at the Emigration Center, or walk among towering basalt columns at Staðarbjargavík. Between May and August, boat tours take you close to colonies of puffins nesting on nearby cliffs.
Swimming in the Infinity Pool
The geothermal pool sits on a hillside overlooking Skagafjörður Fjord. As you swim, you'll see Drangey island rising from the sea and mountains stretching along both sides of the fjord. The pool stays at 30.5°C (87°F), while a separate hot tub reaches 41°C (106°F). Local residents typically swim in the early morning or evening hours when the pool is calm. Admission costs 1000 ISK for adults.
Exploring The Icelandic Emigration Center
Five exhibitions across restored harbor buildings tell stories of Icelanders who moved to North America in the late 1800s. You'll find original photographs, letters, and personal accounts from emigrants. Visit the genealogy center in Frændgarður building to research your Icelandic ancestry. The center opens daily from June 1 to September 1, between 11:00 and 18:00.
Discovering Basalt Formations
Walk below the swimming pool to reach Staðarbjargavík, where rows of hexagonal basalt columns line the shore. According to local stories, these formations mark the home of Skagafjörður's elf population. The columns create natural steps and platforms, letting you climb carefully for different views across the fjord.
Taking Boat Tours
Boats depart from the harbor to Drangey island, where thousands of puffins nest from May to August. During the two-hour journey, you'll pass geological formations along Þórðarhöfði promontory and Málmey island. In summer, look for seals sunbathing on coastal rocks.
Getting There and Around
Hofsós lies 37 kilometers east of Sauðárkrókur. From Ring Road, take Route 76 and drive about 40 minutes to reach the village. The road circles Tröllaskagi peninsula, connecting to Route 82 if you're coming from Akureyri via Siglufjörður. You can walk between the swimming pool, Emigration Center, and harbor in under 10 minutes.
