South Tarawa is the main island in the Republic of Kiribati, a country located in the central Pacific Ocean. The island is home to the capital city, Tarawa, which is also the largest settlement in Kiribati. South Tarawa is a narrow island, just over 2 miles wide, and has approximately half of the country's population. The island is a mix of cultures, with traditional I-Kiribati culture and customs still strong in some areas, and more modern influences evident in other parts of the island.
