Oral is a small city in the north-west of Kazakhstan, near the border with Russia. The city is located on the banks of the Oral River and is known for its paper mills and hydroelectric power stations. The city is also home to a large military base and a number of prisons. Oral is a relatively new city, founded in 1720 as a Russian military outpost. The city has a population of around 220,000 and is the administrative centre of the Oral Region.
