Pavlodar is a city in northeastern Kazakhstan, on the Irtysh River. It's the administrative center of Pavlodar Region. Population: 575,000 (2009 census estimate). Pavlodar is the third most populous city in Kazakhstan, after Almaty and Astana. The city was founded in 1720 as a Russian fort. It was granted city status in 1807.
Pavlodar is an important transportation junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the northern route of the Eurasian Land Bridge. The city is also home to the Karaganda Power Station, the largest thermal power station in Kazakhstan.
The city has a number of historic buildings, including the Governor's Palace, the Cathedral of the Holy Ascension, and the Annunciation Cathedral.
