Hermosillo, capital of the Mexican state of Sonora, is a city of contrasts. It is one of the country’s most important commercial centres, and yet much of the city remains undeveloped. The downtown area is a mix of modern high-rise buildings and colonial-era structures. While the city lacks any major tourist attractions, it is a good base for exploring the surrounding desert and mountains. Hermosillo is also home to a large number of manufacturing plants, and the air is often thick with the fumes from the many maquiladoras (assembly plants).
