Morelia is a city of silver. The colonial buildings that line the main square – many of which house art galleries and museums – are all made of the precious metal, giving the place an air of grandeur. It’s no surprise that this was once the capital of Mexico; the city is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and the cobbled streets and plazas are a joy to wander. While in Morelia, be sure to try some of the city’s famous hand-made ice cream, and if you’re there on a Saturday, take a wander around the Mercado de San Juan, where you can buy anything from fresh fruit to traditional crafts.
