Tampico is the birthplace of mariachi music and home to some of the best seafood in Mexico. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Tamaulipas, about two hours south of the Texas border. Tampico’s main square, Plaza Hidalgo, is a beautiful colonial-era plaza with a towering statue of Mexico’s independence hero, Miguel Hidalgo. The city is also home to the world’s largest mariachi festival, which takes place every September. Tampico is a great place to try Mexican seafood specialties like camarones al ajillo (garlic shrimp) and ceviche. The city is also known for its locally made rum, Ron Zacapa.
