This Dutch town draws visitors to Keukenhof Gardens, where millions of tulips bloom each spring. The 17th-century Keukenhof Castle sits among traditional windmills and fields.
Lisse, a small town in South Holland, is known for its spring tulip displays at the 32-hectare Keukenhof Gardens. Each spring, 7 million bulbs create colorful patterns across the gardens. Beyond the tulips, you can climb the stone spiral staircase of the 14th-century Huys Dever tower, examine antique bulb-planting tools at Museum De Zwarte Tulp, or watch decorated flower floats parade through the streets during the annual Bloemencorso.
When to Visit Keukenhof Gardens
The gardens open from late March through May, with peak blooming typically occurring in mid to late April. You'll want to arrive at 8:00 AM when the gates open to avoid the largest crowds. Each year, gardeners plant 7 million bulbs in new color patterns. Walking paths connect several indoor pavilions where you can see flower arrangements and warm up on colder days. A traditional Dutch windmill stands at the garden's edge, where you can watch it turn in the wind.
Exploring the Tulip Fields
The commercial tulip fields around Lisse grow flowers specifically for bulb production. You can cycle through these fields on four marked routes ranging from 5 to 25 kilometers. Rent-A-Bike van Dam, at Keukenhof's entrance, charges 10 EUR per day and gives you maps of the cycling routes. The red route leads past the North Sea coast and through sand dunes, while the yellow route circles the nearest flower fields. Each route has designated photo spots where you can safely stop to take pictures.
Getting to Lisse
During tulip season, Bus 858 runs from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Keukenhof Gardens every 15 minutes, taking 35 minutes. Another option is taking a Sprinter train from Amsterdam and connecting to Bus 361. By car from Amsterdam, the drive takes about 40 minutes, with parking at Keukenhof costing 6 EUR per day.
Museums and Historical Sites
At Museum De Zwarte Tulp (The Black Tulip Museum), you can examine century-old bulb-planting tools, historical photographs of the first tulip fields, and documents from the Dutch tulip trade. Castle Keukenhof stays open year-round, unlike its gardens. Inside, you'll find 17th-century furniture, paintings from Dutch masters, and original kitchen equipment in the basement. At Huys Dever, the restored 14th-century tower contains medieval weapons, armor, and period furniture across its four floors.
Annual Events
The Bollenstreek Bloemencorso flower parade travels through Lisse each spring, with floats decorated in hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils. Local bands and dance groups perform along the parade route. In August, Castlefest transforms the Castle Keukenhof gardens with music stages, food stalls, and craft demonstrations. Visitors dress in medieval and fantasy costumes while browsing market stalls selling handmade items and watching live performances.
