Ålesund, a coastal town in western Norway, is known for its Art Nouveau architecture and scenic location. After a fire in 1904, the town was rebuilt with colorful buildings featuring ornate facades, turrets, and spires. You can climb Mount Aksla for views of the surrounding islands, fjords, and Sunnmøre Alps. From Ålesund, you can visit nearby fjords like Geirangerfjord and Hjørundfjord.

Panoramic Views from Mount Aksla

For a great view of Ålesund and its surroundings, climb the 418 steps from the town park to the viewpoint atop Mount Aksla. You'll see the town's islands, the Sunnmøre Alps, and the entrance to Geirangerfjord. If you prefer not to climb, you can take a bus or drive to the viewpoint. At the top, you'll find Fjellstua restaurant where you can enjoy a meal or coffee while taking in the scenery.

Marine Life at Atlanterhavsparken

Atlanterhavsparken is one of Northern Europe's largest saltwater aquariums. You'll see various North Atlantic fish species, seals, and penguins. The aquarium has diving shows in the large main tank, and you can walk through an underwater tunnel for close-up views of the sea life. In the outdoor area, you can interact with smaller sea creatures in a touch pool.

Exploring the Fjords

From Ålesund, you can easily reach several Norwegian fjords. Take a day trip to Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site with steep cliffs and waterfalls. Closer to town, Hjørundfjord is surrounded by towering mountains. Consider taking a kayak tour or a sightseeing cruise to experience the fjords from water level.

Local Seafood and Dining

Ålesund's location and fishing industry make it an excellent place to try Norwegian seafood. The town's restaurants serve fresh fish, shellfish, and the local specialty bacalao (dried and salted cod). Visit the harborside fish market to see the day's catch or dine at one of the waterfront restaurants. For a high-end meal, try Restaurant Bro, which focuses on "coastal gastronomy" using local ingredients.

Art Nouveau Architecture in Ålesund

Ålesund's distinctive appearance comes from its reconstruction between 1904 and 1907. As you walk through the town center, you'll see pastel-colored buildings decorated with floral patterns, curved lines, and detailed reliefs. The Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Center) occupies a former pharmacy building and educates visitors about the town's history and architectural style. You can learn about the 1904 fire and the subsequent rebuilding effort that shaped Ålesund's current appearance.

Getting to Ålesund

Ålesund Airport, on Vigra island about 20 minutes from the town center, has daily flights to Oslo and other Norwegian cities. You can connect internationally through Oslo or take seasonal direct flights from some European cities. Many visitors arrive by cruise ship, as Ålesund is a frequent stop on Norwegian fjord itineraries. The cruise terminal is in the town center, allowing easy access to main attractions.
