Gorno-Altaysk

Gorno-Altaysk is the administrative center of the Altai Republic, Russia. It is located in the eastern part of the republic, on the banks of the Katun River. The city has a population of 143,000 (2010 Census).

Gorno-Altaysk was founded on July 1, 1966, as a settlement servicing the construction of the Altai Hydroelectric Power Station. It was granted town status in November 1970.

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with three rural localities, incorporated as the City of Gorno-Altaysk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts. As a municipal division, the City of Gorno-Altaysk is incorporated as Gorno-Altaysk Urban Okrug.

The city is home to the Altai State University.

The city is served by Gorno-Altaysk Airport.
