Izhevsk, the capital of Russia's Udmurt Republic, is a city of 600,000 people in the Ural region. You can explore the Kalashnikov Museum to learn about the famous AK-47 rifle, watch performances at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre, or time your visit for the International Circus Art Festival in March. The city's electronic music scene fills converted industrial spaces with contemporary sounds, while the Gerd National Museum introduces you to traditional Udmurt culture.

Getting to Izhevsk

Daily trains connect Izhevsk with Moscow (20-hour journey) and St. Petersburg from the city's southern railway station. Izhevsk Airport operates regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and several other Russian cities through the local carrier Izhavia. The airport lies 15 kilometers east of the city center.

Weather and Climate

Winters in Izhevsk drop to around -15°C, while summer temperatures reach +20°C. The continental climate creates dry conditions, making both summer and winter temperatures feel more moderate than the numbers suggest. Pack thick winter coats and boots from November to March, while light clothing works well for June through August.

Moving Around the City

Three types of public transport run through Izhevsk: trams, trolleybuses, and regular buses. Buy single-journey tickets from conductors on board or get a monthly pass from ticket kiosks. Local taxis charge standard rates for all passengers, and you can easily order them through mobile apps or by phone.

Museums and Culture

The Kalashnikov Museum and Exhibition Complex opened in 2004, displaying the development and production of the AK-47 rifle alongside the story of its creator, Mikhail Kalashnikov. At the Gerd National Museum, you'll walk through exhibits about Udmurt traditional clothing, crafts, and daily life. The State Opera and Ballet Theatre runs a regular program of classical performances, while the State Circus transforms into an international performance venue during the March festival.

Electronic Music Scene

Izhevsk has become a center for Russian electronic music, with both established venues and underground spaces hosting regular events. Local DJs and producers perform alongside international artists in clubs and repurposed industrial buildings throughout the city. You'll find weekly electronic music events in venues across the central district.

Manufacturing History

The Izhmash factory complex continues to produce military equipment today. While most areas remain closed to visitors, you can learn about the city's industrial past at the Izhmash Museum. The exhibits cover the development of local manufacturing, from motorcycles to military equipment. During World War II, local factories produced over 12 million weapons for the Soviet Army.
