Krasnodar is a city in southern Russia, located on the Kuban River about 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. It is the administrative center of Krasnodar Krai.
Krasnodar was founded on January 12, 1794, as Yekaterinodar. It was named for Catherine the Great, who founded the city. The original name meant “Catherine’s Gift.”
Krasnodar is one of Russia’s most important economic centers. It is home to Kuban’s agricultural industry, which produces grain, sugar beets, sunflower seeds, and other crops. The city is also a center of the Kuban Cossacks, a Russian military and paramilitary organization.
