Ryazan, 196 kilometers southeast of Moscow, is a historic Russian city. You can explore the 18 medieval buildings of the Ryazan Kremlin, see Russian masterpieces at the Pozhalostin Art Museum, or walk through the preserved home of physiologist Ivan Pavlov. The city's surrounding region includes the birthplace of poet Sergei Yesenin and the Oka Nature Reserve with its rare crane species.

Getting to Ryazan

From Moscow, you can reach Ryazan by train from Kazansky Rail Terminal, with the journey taking about 4 hours. Buses depart from Moscow's Vykhino metro station every 1-2 hours between 6:30 AM and 7:30 PM. If driving, take the M5 federal road, which connects Moscow to Ryazan in about 2.5 hours depending on traffic conditions.

Weather and Climate

Summer temperatures in Ryazan reach 19.2°C (66.6°F) in July, making it ideal for walking tours. Winters are cold, with February temperatures dropping to -7.9°C (17.8°F). The city gets 500mm of annual precipitation, including snow from November to March. Visit between June and August for the most comfortable weather.

Exploring the Kremlin

The Ryazan Kremlin contains 18 buildings constructed between the 15th and 19th centuries. The golden domes of the Assumption Cathedral (1693-1699) rise above the complex, decorated in Naryshkin Baroque style with intricate stone carvings. The Palace of Prince Oleg, built across three centuries, is the largest civil building within the walls. The Cathedral of Christ's Nativity, built in stone, was the first permanent structure in the complex.

Museums Worth Visiting

The Pozhalostin Art Museum contains 12,000 works of Russian and Western European art from the 15th to 20th centuries. At the Museum of Long-Range Aviation in Dyagilevo air base, you can see military aircraft and equipment from the Soviet era to present day. Visit Ivan Pavlov's Memorial Museum-Estate to see the scientist's original laboratory equipment and personal belongings.

Day Trips from Ryazan

Travel 40 kilometers to Konstantinovo to visit Sergei Yesenin's childhood home and see the landscapes that inspired his poetry. The red-brick Gothic buildings of Starozhilovsky Stud Farm, designed by architect Fyodor Shekhtel in the 1890s, are 30 kilometers from the city. At the Oka Nature Reserve, 120 kilometers away, you can see all native Russian crane species in their natural habitat.

You can move around Ryazan using minibuses (marshrutkas), regular buses, or trolleybuses. Trolleybuses run on main city routes but are slower than other options.
