Rzhev is an ancient Russian city located in the north-west of the Tver Oblast, Russia. It was first mentioned in 1146 as a part of the Principality of Rzhev-Shcherbakov. Rzhev was sacked by the Mongols in 1238. It passed to Lithuania in the 13th century, and to Poland in 1566. In 1612, it was seized by Russia. The city was extensively damaged during World War II.
