Yoshkar-Ola, the capital of Russia's Mari El Republic, will surprise you with its unexpected architecture. In the city center, you'll walk past a replica of Venice's Doge's Palace, now the National Art Gallery, and along canals lined with Belgian-style buildings. Stop at the Clock of the 12 Apostles for its hourly show, take a photo with the bronze Yoshkin Cat statue, and explore the red-brick walls of the Tsarevokokshaysky Kremlin.

Getting to Yoshkar-Ola

You can reach Yoshkar-Ola by taking a 15-hour train journey or a 1.5-hour flight from Moscow. The city's airport, located 9 km north of the center, operates regular flights to Moscow's Vnukovo International Airport. The train station maintains daily connections with Moscow and Kazan, while the bus station serves multiple regional destinations.

Museums and Cultural Sites

Religious Architecture

The Annunciation Cathedral resembles St. Petersburg's Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, with its distinctive domes and colorful facade. Next to it stands the Church of the Holy Trinity from 1736, the oldest stone building in Yoshkar-Ola.

Nature Areas

The Mari El Republic includes several protected areas. At Marii Chodra National Park in the Ilet valley, you can hike forest trails, fish in local streams, and spot regional wildlife.
