Port Sudan is a sleepy port town on Sudan’s Red Sea coast. It’s the country’s main gateway to the sea and a transit point for goods travelling to and from Ethiopia and Eritrea. The town’s narrow streets are lined with low-rise buildings, mosques and the occasional bazaar. Despite its location on the Red Sea, the town’s beaches are largely unappealing, consisting of rocky shores and mangrove swamps. However, Port Sudan makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area, which is home to a number of interesting attractions, including the ancient city of Suakin, the Blue Nile Falls and the Nubian pyramids.
